Question:
Need help with only three math problems!?

I have to define a variable and translate each sentence into an equation or inequality. Then solve it.

1) The sum of 39 and some number is 103. What is the number?

2) An unknown number less 7 is 19. What is the number?

3) Six times a number is -84. What is the number?

I was absent due to a situation I had to be at, so I don't get these problems at all.
I'd greatly appreciate if anyone could help. :)
Thanks.

Here I go... Ofcourse I don't know how you solve those things at your school, but I'll give it a try. Consider the unknown number each time as x. For the first one you get: 39 + x = 103. Now you put the 39 to the other side of the equation, so it becomes x = 103 - 39. Final answer is thus x = 64. Do it the same way with the other questions. I'll give you the answers, but please think for yourself. 2nd question: x - 7 = 19 so x = 19 + 7 so x = 26. 3th question: 6 × x = -84 so x = -84 / 6 so x = 14. You know that with + or - you have to change the sign if you go to the other side and with × you have to change to / and the other way around. Omg I'm a bad teacher, but I really hope I could helped you a little.

1. You take 103 and subtract 39 from it and you get 64. Check: 39+64=103.

2. I'm not sure if you worded that correctly because it doesn't sound like a problem that can be solved. I don't know. Maybe I'm not in a high enough grade to comprehend it.

3. Divide -84 by 6 and get -14. -14 is the answer. -14 *6=-84.

Hope it helps.

Sorry about #2...

using x as ure "variable" for each individual case you would get

39 + x = 103 (x = 103-39)

x - 7 = 19 (x = 19+7)

6x = -84 (x = -84/6)

39 + x = 103 (subtract 39 to find x)

x + 7 = 19 (subtract 7 to find x)

6 times x = -84 (divide -84 by 6 to find x)

hope that this helped

39 + x = 103

(subtract 39)

x = 64

x - 7 = 19

(add seven)

x = 26

6x = -84

(divide by six)

x = -14

basically take the number you dont know as "x"

39 + x = 103

x=103-39 (x by it's self)

x = 64

x - 7 = 19

x=7+19 (x by it's self)

x = 26

6x = -84

x= -84/6 (x by it's self)

x = -14

1) do 103 minus 39

2) huh..?

3) divide -84 by 6
?

103-39=x, solve for x

19=x-7, solve for x

6*-x=-84, solve for x. note x must be negative as 6 is not.
