My teacher has set us homework to make a contour map model. We have to find a suitable place with different elements to the landscape - e.g. a hill with a ridge and a river or lake etc. We then have to find the map of that place with the contours, have it large print it out and use it as a template for the cutting and sticking.
Only problem is, is I can neither find a good place(which wont take too long nor will it be too easy) or when I do have a good idea, I can't find a suitable map for it.

I was wondering if anybody had a good idea of where I could do and if possible, send me a link to the picture of the map please!!!

Oh and it can be anywhere in the world!

Thank you it will be much appreciated.

You can use online interactive map site such as Google Maps or OpenStreetMap to find the desired place. The Google "terrain" map type has faint contour lines. There is also free website, Geokov, which is a mapping web application with topographic (contour) map coverage. You can use one of the map maker pages (check out the introductory video link below). There are specific topo map types for Canada and USA, also you can choose the OpenCycle map type for world coverage. So if you have to focus on England, OpenCycle map type would have the contours.

I don't think OpenCycle map type does a good job of showing water bodies, etc. If you choose any place in Canada, the CanTopo map type is of good quality and shows not only contour lines but all the water bodies and cultural features, etc. Might have to wait a bit for it to load.

Terrain features such as ridges and gullies would show well in hilly places and where there are mountains, so western Canada would be a good choice. Pan the map with Google Terrain map to see the mountain areas, then choose the topo map type. Also to show and emphasize the relief of the terrain, you can make a shaded relief map. It's very easy. Check out the map maker examples link below and shaded relief topo video. Basically you choose the Google "Terrain" map type and then overlay your desired topo map from the "Add Data to Map" section, and then adjust the opacity of the overlay to show contour lines and the relief clearly.

Remember that you can change the size of the map window. The map maker example page mentions screen capture software (e.g. Jing) for capturing and saving the map window for printing. Education section has comprehensive coverage of terrain feature representation by contour lines.

First off, remember that mapwork is never ever quick and easy. Contour maps, especially, are time consuming. That said. I think Cape Point might meet your teacher's requirements. (Also of Geographical interest, it's the southernmost tip of Africa)

Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding a better map than this one on the internet: http://www.slingsbymaps.com/images/sample-capepoint.jpg

I'll dig around and edit, if I do.

What about the Lake District or the Peak District? Both have a wonderful hilly and rural landscape that should be perfect for your homework, they're riddled with rivers and hills that come in all shapes and sizes
