Jessie,

How about a twist on Dickens' A Christmas Carol. You could substitute Tiny Tim with a survivor from Hurricane Katrina and Scrooge could be the owner of Ford Motor Company.

Or how about a twist on the famous Christmas story by O'Henry where the husband sells his watch to buy his wife a barrette for her long beautiful hair and meanwhile she cuts and sells her hair to buy something new for her husband. It's called The Gift of the Magii. But yours could take on a modern slant with your favorite movie characters or your friends.

I hope you can use on of these....If not, think of something environmentally focused for your story. You can't go wrong on that theme! Good luck!

Honestly, the easiest and best way to do it is to start by just writing about your own experiences with Christmas. Share a funny story that happened to you, or something that really touched you.

Then once you have the foundation in truth, add some fictional elements to "spice" it up. I find it's SO much easier to write when the story is already based on something true.

And besides, there's a reason we're so touched by movies that are "Based on a true story" - those stories really connect with us as humans.

Similarly, when you write from a place of truth, you also create that opportunity to connect more deeply with others.

Another approach you can try is from the movie "Finding Forrester." Instead of writing your own story, first start typing a story that you find interesting... and keep typing until new words come out of your brain and the story becomes your own. Then you can just go edit / rewrite the beginning of the story to make it totally unique.

If you need ideas on where to get Christmas stories to start writing from, or just for inspiration then there's a ton of them (both true and fictional) here:

The story of a girl who doesnt belive in santa and fairytales, untill the ghost of christmas past from the future takes to the futures-past and she sees what happens. the future is destroyed because people dont belive in santa. when she goes back to her time she needs to get people to belive. if she fails, christmas is screwed!

I guess you could tell them about what you and your family do around Christmas time. Or your favorite Christmas memory?
