it may also be represented as canting. Its to do with batik as well.

As batik (fabric) and kante (edge) are both of German derivation, one might suspect the word you looking at is tang (seaweed) which sounds like tjan or tanj depending on pronounciation. I would guess the relationship between these words and your question lies in textile dyeing, something I am familiar with. Which is not the case for finallyhere26, who leaped while I was thinking. Just goes to show yah.
