bonjour is the short form of bonne journee. It is said in general in the morning and it is not formal. It is something which is said in general to everybody

salut is the short form of salutation . Today salut is said at any moment of the day in a friendly manner to people that are friends. salut can be said when you encounter the person but also when you leave the person. please keep in mind that salut is very familiar and cannot be said to anybody

Bonjour is the polite way, and salut is the "hello" you would use with your friends and peers.

Also salut means bless you.
