1 The length of a rectangle is 3 in. more than its width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 30 in.
a. Define a variable for the width.
b. Write an expressopm for the length in terms of the width.
c. Write an equation to find the width of the rectangle. Solve your equation.
d. What is the length of the rectangle?

2. The length of a rectangle is 8 in. more than it's width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 24 in. What are the width and length of the rectangle?

3. The width of a rectangle is one half its length. The perimeter of the rectangle is 24 in. What are the width and length of the rectangle?

4. The length of a rectangular garden is 3 yd more than twice its width. The perimeter of the garden is 36 yd. What are the width and length of the rectangle?

5. The sum of the two consecutive ntegers is -35. If n = the first interger, ehich equation best models the situation?

a. n(n + 1) = -35
b. n + 2n = -35
c. n = (n + 1) = -35
d. n + (2n + 1) = -35

1 -

a. w = width

b. l = w +3

c. P = perimeter

P = 30 = 2l + 2w = 2(w+3)+2w

30 = 2w+6+2w

4w=24

w=6

2.

You should be able to work this out - same as 1

P = 24 = 2l+2w = 2(w+8) + 2w

24 = 2w+16+2w

4w=8

w=2

3.

w = l/2

P = 24 = 2w+2l = 2(l/2) + 2l

24 = 3l

l = 8

w = l/2=8/2=4

4.

l=2w+3

P=36=2w+2l=2w+2(2w+3)

36=2w+4w+6

6w=30

w=5

l=2(5)+3=13

5.

if n is first integer then next integer is n+1

so,

n + (n+1) = -35

I think you made a typo in answer c. which is closest to what I wrote.

Okay.

1. a. Width = W

b. Length = L = W + 3

c. 30 = 2L + 2W

30 = 4L + 6

24 = 4L

6 = L

W idth = W = L - 3 = 3

d. Length = 6

For #2 - #4, use the same basic idea, remembering that the perimeter is equal to 2L + 2W.

5. A, because the integers (whole numbers) are consecutive, and that's the only choice which would deal with consecutive numbers on the number line.

1. w= width

a. l= 3+w

b. p= 30 so 2l + 2w = 30 so, 2(3+w) + 2w = 30

therefore the equation is 6 + 4w =30 answer is w=6 l=8

do the same thing for the rest

This is what I think...:

1. a. w=width

b. length=3+w

c. 30=2(3+w)+2w

30=6+2w+2w

30=6+4w

24=4w

6=w

d. length=3+w

length=3+6

length=9

2. 24=2(8+w)+2w

24=16+2w+2w

8=4w

2=width

length=8+w

length=8+2

length=10

3. 24=2(2w)+2w

24=4w+2w

24=6w

4=w

length=2w

length=2(4)

length=8

4. 36=2(3+2w)+2w

36=6+4w+2w

30=6w

5=width

length=3+2w

length=3+2(5)

length=3+10

length=13

5. c. n+(n+1)=-35

#2

x + (x+8) + x + (x + 8) = 24

4x = 24 - 16

4x = 8

x = 2

#3

x + 2x + x + 2x

24 = 6x

4 = x
