He named this body of water the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Cartier thought this opening might be tyhe beginning of a northwest passage.' 'The next year, the king sent Cartier back to the Gulf of St. Lawrence with more ships and men.....' 'Cartier went back to North America once more, in 1541. This time it was to look not for a northwest passag but for gold.'

The Gulf of St. Lawrence leads to the St. Lawrence River that leads to the Great Lakes, right smack dab in the middle of North America. The area was know as Upper Canada at the time, eventually becoming Ontario.
