I corrected these sentences assuming that you cannot break up a sentence into two separate sentences. I just used commas, periods, and semi-colons. I do not know the exact directions you were given for this assignment, so forgive me if I made any errors in decoding your question.

Hope this helps, and that you will soon understand what you currently do not about semi-colons and colons! ;-)

If you are having trouble with colons and semi-colons, please see this. It will help very much.

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_commacomp.html

As for your sentences:

2. Erika teaches art at Saddleback college, she illustrates children's books part-time.

(A comma is used as a pause, normally. Try saying the sentence out loud.)

3. Overnight shipping was very expensive; nevertheless, we know that we built goodwill by satisfying our client.

Semi-Colons are used kind of like a period. But they are used to link two independent clauses with no connecting words, making it like a period.

8.Marion strongly opposes our current policy; she insists we go out for competitive bids.

You see the difference? Commas are used for pauses, like this. It's a brief pause, not like when sentences are used.

Hopefully I have helped, and if you need some exercises, feel free to check out the source.

Good luck!
