1) convert both fractions so that they have a common denominator, which in this case is 24. Multiply 8/12 by 2/2 to get 16/24, and multiply 4/8 by 3/3 to get 12/24.

2) now that they both have the same denominator, subtract. 16/24 - 12/24 = 4/24

3) Reduce. Both the numerator and the denominator are divisible by 4, reducing the fraction to 1/6.

this equals:

16/24-12/24.

you times the first fraction by 2/2 and the second fraction by 3/3 to get a common denominator.

then:

16-12=4, so 4/24 equals 1/6.
