A homeowner estimates that it will take him 6 days to roof his house. A professional roofer estimates that he could roof the house in 2 days. How long will it take if the homeowner helps the roofer?
Can someone please help me solve this and show me how to do it so I know, thank you

6 weeks. The home owner will be in the roofer's way.
For you MATH problem, the home owner completes 1/6 of the roof per day and the roofer completes 1/2 of 3/6t per day. Working together, they theoretically complete 1/6 + 3/6 = 4/6 of 2/3 of the roof per day. That is the same as 1 1/2 days for the full roof.

The pro stuffs the home owner down the chimney and goes home.

no licensed contractor would permit the homeowner to "help" do the job. Roofer's insurance company would cancel his policy and then the state would jerk his contracting license.
Steven's math logic is correct -- assuming you're doing your homework here. The method is to calculate the rate at which work is done by each party, then add the rates together, and divide the combined rate into the total work to be done. I GUARANTEE that they will be some version of using this on your exam [it's a favorite of teachers and exam writers]

Well, the answer seem to be 2+6=8 days/2men =4 days. Which seems to be right. It would take the roofer 2 extra days if the homeowner helps, Or it would take the homeowner 2 less days since the roofer can do all of it in 2 days.

2 days. The pro roofer will tell the owner to get out of the way.

In real life the home owner should keep out of the way apart from bringing out coffee and maybe a beer from time to time.

if the home owner takes 6 days and the contractor can do it in 2 days , then the owner working with the contractor will take 8 days
the extra time will be from arguements of how it should be done properly and how to take short cuts
