an artifact or artifact is any object made or modified by a human culture, and often one later recovered by some archaeological endeavor. Examples include stone tools such as projectile points, pottery vessels, metal objects such as buttons or guns, and items of personal adornment such as jewellery and clothing. Other examples include bone that show signs of human modification, fire cracked rocks from a hearth or plant material used for food.

The study of these objects is an important part of the field of archaeology, although the degree to which they represent the social groupings that created them is a subject over which archaeological theoreticians argue. Focusing on the artifact alone can produce very intensive and enlightening work on the object itself but can ignore surrounding factors which may shed further light on the manufacturing society. Traditional museums are often criticised for being too artifact-led, that is by displaying items without any contextual information about their purpose or the people who made them.

Artifacts can come from any archaeological context or source such as:

* Buried along with a body (grave goods).

* From any feature such as a midden or other domestic setting

* Hoards

* Votive offerings

1. any object made by human beings, esp. with a view to subsequent use.

2. a handmade object, as a tool, or the remains of one, as a shard of pottery, characteristic of an earlier time or cultural stage, esp. such an object found at an archaeological excavation.

3. any mass-produced, usually inexpensive object reflecting contemporary society or popular culture: artifacts of the pop rock generation.

4. a substance or structure not naturally present in the matter being observed but formed by artificial means, as during preparation of a microscope slide.

5. a spurious observation or result arising from preparatory or investigative procedures.

6. any feature that is not naturally present but is a product of an extrinsic agent, method, or the like: statistical artifacts that make the inflation rate seem greater than it is.

Would a "death mask" work? You'll need help. First, get roll of gauze and cut it into strips about 6 to 8 inches long, enough to cover your face but not your hair, ears or neck. Next, make a paste with plaster-a-paris. You or a friend needs to be the model. Cover the face with Vaseline, lay on the floor, run the gauze strip through the paste, and place it on the face. Each strip needs to overlap about 1/2 inch. Use two or more layers over the whole face to give it body. DO NOT COVER THE NOSTRILS! Mold the strips to the face but do it quickly. The mix will begin to warm, that mean's it's hardening. The model needs to stay still and not move the face or mouth for about 10 minutes. After it dries the model may sit up, all hands on the mask, slowly pull the face from the mask, not the mask from the face. And there you have the death mask, it will resemble the wrappings for a mummy. You can then lightly spray paint it with a tan or brown to give it some age. Good luck.

an artifact is any object made/modified by humans or human culture. it can be something ornate and well known like the golden mask found on king tut's mummy in egypt, or something seemingly ordinary like feces (called coprilites by archaeologists--these can be used to date an archaeological site as well as give insight to the diet of a culture) or leftover pieces of food. the thing about artifacts is that no matter wether they are big or small ornate or ordinary they are an important piece in the puzzle of human culture and our past.
