January 25 - Idi Amin stages a coup and deposes Milton Obote.

January 25 - Intelsat IV is launched to provide commercial communications across the Atlantic.

February 11 - the US, UK, and USSR sign the Seabed Treaty, banning underwater nuclear tests.

February 13 - South Vietnam invades Laos.

February 15 - The UK and Ireland convert to a decimal currency.

March 26 - East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) declares independence from Pakistan.

March 29 - Lt. William Calley is found guilty of 22 murders in My Lai.

April 17 - The People's Republic of Bangladesh forms.

April 24 - 500,000 people march on Washington, DC, and 125,000 in San Francisco in opposition to the Vietnam War.

December 3 - Pakistan attacks 9 Indian airbases. In response, India invades Pakistan and Nixon directs the 7th Fleet to sail to the Indian ocean.

December 16 - Pakistan surrenders, and the Bangladesh Liberation War is over.

December 18 - In response to coming off the gold standard, the US dollar is devalued for only the second time in history.

January 2 – A ban on radio and television cigarette advertisements goes into effect in the United States.



January 14 – Seventy Brazilian political prisoners are released in Santiago, Chile.



July 19–23 – Major Hashem al-Atta ousts Jaafar Muhammad al-Nimeiri in a military coup in Sudan. Fighting continues until on July 22, when pro-Nimeiri troops win. Al-Atta and 3 officers are executed.
