‘THE FATHER OF HISTORY': HERODOTUS
"I, Herodotus of Halicarnassus, am here setting forth my history, that time may not draw the color from what man has brought into being, nor those great and wonderful deeds, manifested by both Greeks and barbarians, fail of their eport, and, together with all this, the reason why they fought one another." -Herodotus
Yiassou. My name is Hροδοτος or also Herodotus. I was born in the city of Halicarnassus, now near Bodrum, Turkey. I am regarded as the "Father of History" but unfortunately some people refer to me as the "Father of Lies". As you know, in my Histories I have only told me what other people in the lands I have traveled in have told me. I have once said, "I must tell what is said, but I am not at all bound to believe it, and this comment of mine holds about my whole History".
I was born into a very wealthy and well-known family. My parents' names were Lyxes and Dyro. I received good education during my school years but when I was a child, there was a much more important event taking place. It was the Persian Wars, a war fought between all of Greece and Persia. The writings of Homer really did encourage me to study the affairs of humans and human thought and nature. I had also learned a lot from the Sophists of my time. It was from Homer's writings of the Trojan War where I had recognized the Persian invasion of Greece was a big and important event taking place.
The Greek world was fermenting with intellectual and creative ideas and studies. I had gained much information from many different philosophers and scientists, including Anaximander and Sophocles.
How do I take up space? Should I write about his 'Histories' also?
Thanks.
