Is the object of a prepostition the noun that end the prepositional phrase or the word that the prepositional phrase modifies?

For example, in the sentence:
The dog was under the table.

The prepositional phrase is "under the table"
and "under the table" modifies "dog"
and "under" modifies "table"

but is the object of the preposition "dog" or "table"?????
Four answers:
?

The object of the preposition is "table". It is the noun included in the prepositional phrase. It might help to set off the phrase in parentheses like:

The dog was (under the table). table=object

The squirrel ran (around the tree). tree=object

(At the coffeeshop) she ordered toast. coffeeshop=object

Hope this helps!

A preposition is a word that shows a relation between a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence.

The object of the preposition is the noun or pronoun that comes after the preposition.

So. Table
