Do something that means something to you- relationship, characters, virtues... along those lines.
Find a value you want to express a point about (friendship, greed, power/responsibility, death, life, pride, independence, humility, etc) and have some sort of character learning and developing. Nothing too serious though, keep the development simple.
IDEAS (made up on the spot, so please no criticism. Feel free to tweak):
The protagonist, a bullied and nervous fellow, learns that in the end, we're all human when he sees the bully distressed about something. He helps and they form mutual understanding.
Twist it up and you can make it something MUCH darker. The bullied kid could see the bully being oppressed by another person. The bullied kid realizes that like in the animal kingdom, there exists a chain of authority.
A model who is bulimic visits a hospital to see a relative or friend and sees a young anorexic girl who is hideously bony. They talk and the model learns that media influences these girls to starve themselves, and she walks out of the hospital with a new mindset and a blooming friendship.
You get the point, right? It doesn't have to be a happy ending though- I am a huge fan of dark Romantic writings such as The Raven and such- wonderful poems and stories!
Write what you want, and convey a MESSAGE with your story.
Good luck!
