I have this conversion problem I need to do for math, and I need to show how to do it step by step, including which units cancel out, but I'm not sure how to do it.

I need to convert:
5.24 kilometers/hour to meters/second

please help!

1 kilometer= 1000 meters

1 hour= 60 minutes= 3600 seconds

5.24km/hr*1000m/1km (this is essentially multiplying it by 1)= 5240m/hr

5240m/hr*1hr/3600s= 1.455...m/s
?

It's all about multiplying or dividing by 10. See link below. you might find it easier to write out the conversion factor, so that it cancels out nicely, for example: 1.a. 157 cs = 157 cs x (1s / 100 cs) = 1.57 s. Note the conversion factor in the round brackets. Write the top part (the numerator) as 1 of whatever unit you want to go to, and then write the bottom part (whatever units you are converting from) as however many units there are of the bottom to make up the top. It takes 100 centi-seconds to make up one second, so you multiply by 1 second, and divide by 100 centiseconds. For part 2, rewrite the number and move the decimal point to the right 1 place for every positive power, or to the left for every negative power. Then follow part 1 to convert. 3. You want to convert mass into quantity. So you can multiply mass by (quantity / mass) to get quantity - the masses cancel out. In this case, (quantity / mass) = ( 1 / [3.721 x 10 ^ -22] ) 4. convert cm / s to km / s as in step 1, then convert s to hr (there are 60 s / 1 min, and 60 min / 1 hr) Hope that helps.

btw there might be better places to get help for homework questions...i personally told my brothers to use tutor.com or brainfuse (it might be offered at your library website for free) because that way you can interact with another person and can see what they are drawing. It'll make your question a whole lot more clearer to the person who's answering your quesiton and a more clearer answer for you.

but anyways

5.24 km/hour x ( 1 hour/3600 sec) x (1000 m/1km)

=1.456 m/s

Unfortunately, jake's answer is off by a factor of 10, because there aren't 360 seconds in an hour. There are 3,600 seconds in an hour: 60 sec/min x 60 min/hr = 3,600 sec/hr.

1 km = 1,000 m ----> 5.24 km = 5.24 x 1,000 m = 5,240 m.

Since there are 3,600 sec/hr, then 5.24 km/hr = 5,240 m/3,600 sec ≈ 1.4556 m/sec.
