i need to answers a couple of questions too.
so this are the questions.
1. Did you feel that the outcome of this story was credible and poweful, or did you feel cheated by the surprise ending? What kind of ending had you been led to anticipate? Explain your answer.
2. what poing of view does the write use in the third part of the story, which occurs within the few seconds before the farquhar dies? why is this point of view particularly appropriate?
3. Do you think Bierne tries to enlist your sympathies toward either the union or the confederate side? or does the story seem to be focused on a more general theme about the nature of the war?
4. how did bierce manipulate your feelings? how did he prepare you for the ending?
5. what does the story reveal about the psychology of a person in a life- or death situation? Do you find this psychology believable or farfetched ?

Read more Ambrose Bierce. He wasn't called "Bitter" Bierce for nothing. But you might also try O Henry, Edgar Allan Poe, Ernest Hemingway's short stories, James Thurber, Shirley Jackson and Flannery O'Connor. They're not all quite so grim, but they're all very clever and very well written. ETA: The hallmark of a good short story is the twist in the tail. All the above authors do it well.

If YOU need to answer the questions then perhaps YOU should read the story. I know it sounds rude and I apologize. But this is an excellent story and the ending may be what led up to all the TV shows with the "You won't believe the dream I just had "storyline. Please, please read the story. Of course you are led to think he survived and made it back home, but there is so much more to be learned.
