The independent variable is a variable that does not depend on anything else. In other words, other factors cannot affect it because it is something all by itself. For example, time is an independent variable. In an experiment, after a certain amount of time passes, something may occur. However, the amount of time that passes is separate and would not be affected by other factors. Nothing will affect the time that passes.

In simple Middle school/ High School type experiments, there are generally 2 types of variables: Independent, and dependent. Most of the time, the dependent variable DEPENDS on the independent variable. For example: If your experiment is to figure out how many cars pass by your house from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, your INDEPENDENT variable would be the time, say 12 noon. Your DEPENDENT variable would be the amount of cars, because how many cars have passed DEPENDS on what time it is. Get it? Also, when you're talking in terms of Algebra and math in general, usually your independent variable goes on the X axis and your dependent variable goes on the Y axis.

A variable that you believe might influence your outcome measure. This might be a variable that you control, like a treatment, or a variable not under your control, like an exposure. It also might represent a demographic factor like age or gender.
