There could be an error in capitalization, usage, grammar, diction or punctuation

The sentence is:
This is one of the paintings which is going to be sold at auction this afternoon.

The choices are:
a. one
b. which
c. is going
d. at auction
e. no error

The answers is c but I can't figure out why. Any help? Thanks.

It's diction problem. "Is going" is incorrect word usage because it isnt guranteed to sell. I would use " may" one person said it needs to be "Are going" they are wrong because only ONE of the paintings is the subject.

They could be saying that "is going" is wrong because "paintings" is plural. You wouldn't say "paintings which is going to be sold."; you would say "paintings which ARE going to be sold."

However, the "which" is also wrong.

The sentence should read: "This is one of the paintings that will be sold at auction this afternoon."

The interesting point is, it isn't a fact in the future. It will be offered for sale, but there's no guarantee it will be sold.

Well, if you leave out "is going"... you could only replace it with "is", but if you leave "is going to" then you can freely insert "will". Because it's a fact in the future.

I'm with you. The sentence is perfectly acceptable. I would choose e as the answer.
